There’s More To Comfort Than Memory Foam Cushions

When it comes to cushions, comfort is everything. But have you ever stopped to consider what this really means? It's a buzzword that's thrown around a lot but it can have different interpretations depending on who you are and what the purpose of a cushion is. Maybe a car seat cushion performs a very different function to your chair cushions at home. There are cushions for kids and cushions for guests. The former may invoke comfort with a playful, quick-clean design while the latter needs to be elegant, beautiful, and made from expensive materials.

So before you decide which cushion to buy, why not spend some time thinking about comfort more broadly?

The former may invoke comfort with a playful, quick-clean design while the latter needs to be elegant, beautiful, and made from expensive materials.

So before you decide which cushion to buy, why not spend some time thinking about comfort more broadly?

A Comfortable Environment

Firstly, let’s consider comfort from a more psychological perspective. Think about people you feel comfortable around. Maybe it’s a parent, a partner, a best friend, or a teacher. What makes them comforting? It’s nothing physical (unless they giving you a cuddle). No, it’s more emotional than that. It’s about the environment they create.

The same could be said for a cushion. For instance, living room seat cushions are not just there for their functionality; they’re decorative. They’re as much a part of creating a pleasant living environment as a painting or a potted plant. In this case, the comfort comes from their color and design.

Maybe a shockingly bright pink color makes you feel instantly uncomfortable, especially when placed upon a bright orange couch. You could have the finest memory foam cushions but if they don’t look nice, then how comforting are they really? Sometimes, the actual function of the cushion isn’t the thing that creates a high level of comfort. Often, it’s about creating an environment where your family and household guests feel happy.

Comfort on Your Body

The second conception of comfort – and perhaps the one that first comes to mind when you consider the word – is physical comfort. How does the cushion feel when it’s being used? These are kinds of cushions that conform to your body shape and offer the maximum level of support. In this instance, the color and design are secondary to what the cushion is actually doing.

An example of this could be your outdoor chair cushions. Perhaps these are used for family camping trips and so are destined to become dirty. Aesthetics, therefore aren’t important. You just want to make sure that you’re comfortable when spending cold nights huddled up next to the campfire.

This kind of comfort is important for cushions that you spend a long time on. Just like you’d use a high-quality mattress and memory foam pillow to ensure an undisturbed and restless sleep, cushions can embody a vital biological function. For instance, your desk chair seat cushions should be designed to optimize your posture and ensure that you don’t get aches and pains when spending hours a day working on your laptop.

So think about these two concepts of comfort when shopping for your perfect cushion. Of course, they’re not mutually exclusive and both are important but it can help to think about them separately to help you better understand the significance of comfort in your life.
